Will NIH Repay Your Student Loans?

Lunch & LearnJoin the Grant Services & Analysis Research Development team for a virtual Lunch & Learn offering an overview of the NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). LRPs are designed to help recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or biobehavioral research careers. Offering guidance on navigating the LRPs and writing a successful application, LRP Ambassadors (former and current LRP awardees) will comprise the panel of presenters, including:
  • Colin Cooke, M.D., Associate Professor, Medical School
  • Cindy Hsu, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Medical School
  • Jamie Mitchell, Ph.D., Associate Professor, School of Social Work
  • Thomas Valley, M.D., Assistant Professor, Medical School

The NIH LRP has helped many scientists reduce their educational debt and continue their research careers. In exchange for a two-year research commitment, NIH will repay qualified educational debt up to $50,000 per year. Applicants must meet the following criteria: have a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent); research must be funded by a domestic nonprofit, university, or government entity; educational loan debt equal to at least 20 percent of your annual salary; conduct research for an average of at least 20 hours/week; and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.

The 2022 application cycle for LRP awards will open September 1, 2022, and closes on November 17, 2022. More information about eligibility and the application process can be found on the LRP website.
