About Thomas Bernd, Werner, Ph.D.

Thomas Bernd Werner, Ph.D., holds a master degree in chemistry (Diploma, 1981), a Ph.D. in biochemistry (1986), a Dr. habil (Genetics, 2002), and is currently adjunct professor of internal medicine with a second affiliation at the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (CCMB) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, USA (since 2009).

He is the founder and CEO/CSO of Genomatix Software, founded 1997, and held that position until 2009. He remained as a managing director until 2011, when he left the company but remained a board member until 2015. Also in 2015, he was a founding member of the charitable association “m4 Personalized Medicine” and still serves as chairman of the executive committee of that association. He has maintained research activities constantly since his Ph.D. and is currently active in cutting-edge scientific developments for personalized medicine, medical genomics, and epigenomics with a strong focus on gene regulation. He currently serves as a scientific business consultant for academic projects and their commercialization, start-ups, and late stage companies participating in high-profile international academic research projects. 

His scientific career is documented with a total of 156 peer-reviewed publications (The original Mat Inspector paper in Nucleic Acids Res., 1995 has been cited over 6,000 times, the follow-up paper in Bioinformatics 2005 has been cited over 1,500 times to date) and and given over 100 invited talks.
