IRBMED Welcomes New Director

January 6, 2022
Joshua FedewaOn January 6, the Medical School Office of Research welcomed Josh Fedewa as the new director of IRBMED, effective January 18, 2022. Fedewa most recently served as IRB director at the University of Texas Southwestern, and prior to working in Texas, he was assistant director of the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance at the Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

This announcement follows recent organizational changes in IRBs here at U-M, where Judy Birk has moved into the new role of IRB Executive Director in the U-M Office of the Vice President for Research, and Cory Zolondek has also shifted to central campus as director of IRB-Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences. Additionally, Lana Gevorkyan has been named director of U-M IRB Shared Services and Strategic Partnerships. Note that Fedewa and Gevorkyan will both have joint appointments in the Medical School and the U-M Office of the Vice President of Research, while IRBMED remains wholly a unit of the Medical School Office of Research.

"Michigan Medicine is committed to protecting the rights of research participants and conducting research in the most ethical manner possible," notes Steven Kunkel, Executive Vice Dean for Research at the Medical School and Chief Scientific Office for Michigan Medicine. "We are confident that as director of IRBMED, Josh will continue to build upon the office's track record of excellence and collaboration with our research community conducting work with human participants."
